Inevitably, the sled falls through a crack with the doctor in it but Jerry manages to pull him free with ropes.
Nearing their destination, Jerry receives a radio call from the base warning them of an approaching severe storm and advising them to return immediately.
McLaren is intent on finding the meteor and persuades Jerry to ignore the warning and continue the search which is ultimately successful. The return journey is fraught with danger as the storm closes in on them. McLaren falls over a cliff while trying to receive a radio signal and falls heavily on the ice below. The ice cracks and he falls into freezing water but is saved by one of the courageous huskies who carries a rope to him.
In the process, McLaren breaks a leg. They have been on their own for nearly six months. Shepard makes it back to base and is dismayed to find the body of Old Jack, still attached to the chain, and no sign of the other dogs. After a joyous reunion, Shepard attempts to load the dogs into the snowmobile, but Max runs off, with Shepard in hot pursuit. Max leads him to Maya, lying in the snow — weak, but alive. With six of his eight sled dogs in tow, Shepard heads back to civilization.
The ill-fated Japanese expedition to Antarctica inspired the hit film Antarctica , of which Eight Below is a remake. When the team returned a year later, two dogs were still alive. Another seven were still chained up and dead, five were unaccounted for, and one died just outside Showa Station.
The film was dedicated to the memory of Koreyoshi Kurahara, the director of Antarctica , who died four years before it was released. Each actor-dog had help from other dogs that performed stunts and pulled sleds. In all, over 30 dogs were used to portray the film's eight canine characters. McClaren, the scientist would exert himself a little more to save the dogs, since they saved his life. How he gets into trouble and what the dogs do to save him I will leave for you to experience; it provides the film's most compelling moments. Movies about animals always live with the temptation to give the animals human characteristics. Lassie, for example, could do everything but dial the telephone and drive the car. The brilliance of " March of the Penguins " involved dropping a French soundtrack in which the penguins expressed themselves in voiceover dialogue and simply trusting in the reality of their situation.
